wow!!! double wow!!! you are so lucky to see tulips in the ground this time of year. even with the prolonged cold snap (san jose, calif had a hail storm just on sunday!).
aside from dandelion, my other favorite flower is long-stemmed parrot tulip. but they only look good in bunches, a lone tulip looks so pathetic. i guess it's sorta like love birds.
Living in so cal one never has to worry or think about snow and frost. (frost rarely). It was nice to take a look at the plants in the mountains that NEED cold weather to do anything. Tulips will come out in so cal but they never look all that good after the first year. Plants such as Lilacs do not exist where I live. We have no first plants of spring. It was great walking through the mountains and seeing what the arrival of spring means to much of the rest of the country.
