I absolutely LOOOOOOOOVE the smell of Jasmines.......Mmmmmmmmm..but I'm not a gardener in any way, I kill plants and don't own any...the only live things we have in the yards are grass and shrubs (very low maintenance). So how do you grow them? I see them at the garden center, I guess you're supposed to transplant them, but would not know the first thing about growing them, or making sure they don't die. When's the best time toput them in? That's my goal is to get some soon so that I can have them by next spring...

Star Jasmine are widely available in Southern California garden centers starting this month. They should also be in Northern California garden centers at this time or soon. Plant them now. They do best in the ground in full sun. Any afternoon sun is considered full sun. Morning sun is considered shade. Dig a hole and mix the soil that you have with Gromulch, Amend or Miricle Gro Soil. Plant your Star Jasmine and keep the soil slightly moist and not too wet. It will grow mostly during the warm and hot months so get it in the ground soon so it can get a good start on growing this year. The Stars bloom during the warm months. There are other Jasmines that have different bloom cycles and you can get a great smelling yard year round with a few different variety's. (pink, night blooming, Arabian . . . .)
After the first year they will require less care. (much like your established shrubs) I do nothing to mine other than trim it back as needed. They can be grown in pots but they will require more care and nurturing. I hope this helps if you have any questions let me know.

Thanks for the info! I love Jasmine as well, and hope one day, to get some to plant.

A one gallon container should cost you about 6 dollars. Give it a try.

i went for a hike around town today, and saw a wall of jasmines ... remembering this post, i stopped and allowed the perfume to permeate my entire being.

my mother plant them near the bedroom windows, and the smell of jasmine reminds me of my childhood summers. so childhood wasn't all bad.

Scents are powerful things. I single whiff can transport someone across time and space.
