Speed-bumps to Democracy

Please stop calling all if Iraq's bloody days and failures “Speed-bumps” to democracy.

Speed bumps are put up by governments to purposely slow the flow of progress. I think instead of calling them “speed bumps” to democracy we should call them “potholes” on the road to democracy. But, potholes usually get a quick fix. Unfortunately, we are in a position that will require more than a quick fix.

Anyone have any better road based analogy's other than speed bumps and potholes?

I know it is just a word but it does bother me. Let's have some fun with this.

I once read that 100,000 children had died between the two wars because we would not let Iraq have a filtration device. It was a banned material.
