Pope-

Everyone is talking about all the things the Pope did in his life. I would like to add that the now dead Pope was the one ultimately responsible for aiding and abetting child molesters. He leadership on this issue failed at every step.

Whoa, Nelly

Do you hear that phrase often?

No. And I just used it in the sense of 'now hold on a moment here!' I went to bed last night (it's now morning in Co. Antrim) with the crossword and Walt Whitman. But I could not concentrate on either because of your post.
I don't entirely disagree and am as apalled as anyone about the scandal of paedophile priests. But to say that JP2 'aided and abetted' is overly strong. I didn't agree with everything he did but I think that he was, on the whole, a Good man. If I'd read that on another blog I wouldn't have responded but I like yours better than most blogs so I had to respond to it. I've got more thoughts on the matter but it's time for a shower and a coffee. Perhaps we'll get back to it.

Well Nelly all opinions are welcome. The U.S. Has been hit hard over the last few years by molestation charges. In all cases the priest has been moved to other areas when accusations were made. It turns out that priests molested in several areas before being charged. But, they continued to shuffle priest away from accusations. Police were never notified and the church fought to keep all records out of the legal system. I am under the assumption that the american catholic church is losing money at a staggering rate. ($85 million settlement in the Boston )

The Pope as the leader of the church needed to take action. He needed to show leadership.

My local radio station gives him credit for 50% of the fall of communism. If we can give him the credit for the good we must also look at the bad.

Call me a pedant - for that is what I am. What I took exception to was the phrase 'aided and abetted'. I do agree with you that the catholic church has an appalling record as regards abusive and paedophile clergy. The Boston scandal has been widely reported here and it does beggar belief that is what was considered acceptable practice. Similar things happened here too. I don't agree with everything the late Pope did or taught. I strongly disagreed with his insistence that celibacy should remain - it seems wrong that Anglican priests crossing over to Catholicism can be married and the home-grown ones cannot. If priests could marry I believe it would be healthier for the church.
