Troops have cut off all roads and bridges leading out of Fallujah and have turned back hundreds of men trying to flee the city during the assault. Only women, children and the elderly can leave.
It's hard to know what to think when our only source of information is the military. I heard an Iraqi specialist on the TV the other night saying that negotiations were curtailed 10 days ago by the Allies, not the "insurgents" (what does that mean exactly? Are they foreign mercenaries or just guys trying to defend their town?).
Someone else pointed out that they Allies are fighting a losing battle as all the real trouble-makers left aleady and are regourping elsewhere.
What can one make of it all? On thing is for sure, no-one bothers to ask the Iraqis for their opinion. They are, after all, paying for this operation in human lives and future taxes on their own oil.
